November 18th, 2010 by Guest Author

Alcohol poisoning or alcohol overdose are two terms used interchangeably, for a condition in which an individual experiences intoxication due to excess consumption of alcohol. If the alcohol that has been consumed rises above the normal level of blood in a person, it may result in a number of unpleasant symptoms and in some cases, serious consequences.

The condition of alcohol poisoning is a life threatening one, which basically takes place once a person has, drank much more than the normal levels. There are a few other factors that may trigger the condition too, such as the metabolic rate of the person in question, as this too combined with the amount of alcohol can have a critical effect on the person’s well being.

At times even the time of the day at which alcohol was taken may play a role, including the concentration of the drink. For example, if the person does not add a soft drink or water in the drink, it would be of a too high concentration, which would lead to adverse effects. However, the most vital and significant cause of alcohol poisoning remains the amount of drink.

There are several symptoms that start occurring in case alcohol poisoning has taken place. These are evident enough to make one realize the importance of treatment and medical care, as in the case necessary steps are not taken, a life threatening situation may take place. The signs do not show up all at once, in one order.

Also take into account that this would be a medical emergency which will require attention immediately. The following are the signs which make it easier for one to understand the onset of this condition:

A person’s breathing rate may start to decline accompanied with a drop in body temperature. He or she may feel as if a severe illness has taken place, as some signs would also start affecting the person’s appearance, for example the skin turning blue or completely pale. This usually takes place because the person’s body gets dehydrated due to the excessive consumption of alcohol. Confusion also starts to occur, and eventually he or she might become unconscious.

Dizziness and extreme confusion are the trademark signs of alcohol consumption. However, all of these may be mild as compared to the following ones: Seizures, irregularities in behavior and breathing rate, and difficulty in carrying out reflex actions may also occur.
