Help For Sprains And Strains

August 15th, 2010 by Guest Author

While sprains and strains can occur in almost any of life’s activities, they are often associated with sports and other athletic activities. The additional stress of these activities can cause an injury that may put you on the sidelines for a few weeks, so you will want to take some steps to prevent them from occurring.

Injuries that occur in the muscle tissue or the tissue that connects the muscle to bone (tendon) is called a strain. A strain can occur in most of the skeletal muscles, although some are much more common than others. Extreme strains can rupture a muscle which is an incapacitating injury until healing occurs.

A sprain is an injury to the ligaments. Ligaments are the connective tissue that connect bone to bone in a joint. Sprains occur when the joint is dislocated. Many times you will feel a pop as the joint goes out of place.

One way that helps prevent these injuries is adding stretching exercises to your daily routine. Even if you are not participating in your sport for the day, the additional flexibility can prevent injury. Persons who are carrying extra weight should work to lose the weight as being overweight increases the likelihood of tissue injury.

Conditioning exercises can help to strengthen muscles and prevent injuries. The stronger the muscles the better they are able to withstand stress and prevent injury. If you plan to take part in athletic events, conditioning exercises are a necessity.

There are some steps that can help if an injury does occur. Ice packs help to reduce swelling and to numb pain. Rest allows healing to take place without further injury. Elevate the injured area in order to reduce swelling. When an injury occurs, you should seek the advice of you doctor. You may need to do some rehabilitation exercises to help prevent further injury.
